The future of radar: Airbus and Hisdesat announce PAZ-2 agreement

11 June 2026

Earlier this year, Airbus Defence and Space and Hisdesat have agreed to prolong and expand their long-standing and successful collaboration in the international radar Earth observation market with the signing of an agreement to commercialize imagery and applications from the future PAZ-2 radar satellites.

The continued partnership between Airbus Defence and Space and Hisdesat serves to bridge the gap between current and future radar Earth Observation capabilities.

By formalising an agreement to commercialise data from the upcoming PAZ-2 satellites, the two organisations ensure that international markets maintain uninterrupted access to high-resolution imagery and specialised radar applications.

Precision without precedent

The PAZ-2 programme, led by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and Hisdesat, will feature two twin satellites designed to replace the original PAZ (in service since 2018) in constellation with the German TerraSAR-X / TanDEM-X satellites (in service since 2007 and 2010). While this first generation, known as Airbus and Hisdesat Radar Constellation, set the standard, PAZ-2 is shattering it with specs that redefine "high resolution."

Precision without precedent – Radar Constellation

Last July, Hisdesat awarded Airbus Defence and Space the contract to manufacture these two new satellites.

The PAZ-2 satellites are scheduled to operate in constellation and will integrate advanced technologies enabling unprecedented image quality with an improved resolution of up to 10 cm. They will also increase coverage to 6.7 million km² per day per satellite, offering a maximum image swath width of 500 km.

To meet urgent operations requirements, the PAZ-2 mission will provide reliable near-real-time services, with unprecedented latencies from acquisition to data availability.

Looking ahead

With the first satellite expected to enter service by mid-2031, we are already laying the groundwork for the next generation of geospatial intelligence. This agreement ensures that our partners will have early and reliable access to the highest-quality radar imagery on the market.

Stay tuned as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible from orbit!
